The Kimberley is Calling: The Bungle Bungle

Where: Bungle Bungle Range, Purnululu National Park, Western Australia

How to get here: Drive to the Kimberley in your own vehicle or there are direct flights into Kununurra from Darwin, Perth and Broome. The Bungle Bungle is a half day drive from Kununurra, or one hour scenic flight with Aviair.

Highlights: There are five main attractions in the national park; the iconic Bungle Bungle behive-shaped striped domes, Cathedral Gorge. Echidna Chasm, Mini Palms and Piccaninny Gorge.

Where to stay: Dinner, bed and breakfast packages at Bungle Bungle Savannah Lodge offer a sense of comfort in the middle of the outback. Temperatures drop to near-zero over the dry season, so hotel-quality bedding, heated showers, an outdoor fire pit and hot coffee in the morning are a nice treat! The lodge is home to the only pool in Purnululu National Park, which is ideal after a day exploring, then retreat by the licensed 'Bungles Bar' as the sun goes down. Enjoy chef-prepared meals infused with native herbs and spices, as you dine under the stars in a region famed for its clear night skies.

What to do: Guided walking tours are not usually my thing, although I am glad to have joined a Bungle Bungle Guided Tours trip as the amount of information you learn on the cultural significance of the region and facts on flora / fauna are so fascinating! The company run tours to the Domes & Cathedral Gorge as well as Echidna Chasm in the north. For something more unique, opt for the Piccaninny Gorge Heli Hike which takes you to a part of the national park where few people have ever been before.

See the region from above for the ultimate adventure in Purnululu National Park, on a Bungle Bungle helicopter flight with HeliSpirit. This is my favourite way to explore any unique landscape, and I loved that they fly with the doors off here! Much better for photographing and you really feel close to nature.
